You don’t have to be gracious but it is much nicer if you can be. ‘No’ needn’t be the abrupt bark the word may suggest. If you need it to sound this way, in extreme situations, have the word ready and spit it out. Don’t be scared of giving a forceful, no-holds-barred, back-off refusal if that is what the situation requires.

Many of the circumstances you would like to handle more confidently, though, aren’t extreme; they are the day-to-day requests and expectations you find difficult to refuse or to negotiate. There are ways of not saying ‘yes’ which get your point across firmly so you feel nicely confident and in control and demonstrate respect and understanding of the other person.
